  1. A 1969 crime novel written by Italo-American author and screenwriter.
  2. The novel, covering the years 1945 to 1955, details the story of a fictitious Sicilian Mafia family based in New York City and headed by Don Vito Corleone,  also providing Vito’s back story from early childhood to adulthood.
  3. The book introduced Italian criminal terms like consigliere, caporegime, Cosa Nostra, and omertà to an English-speaking audience.
  4. The novelist has said that he wrote the work as a compendium of tales about criminals that he heard while growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, an Italian section of New York City, along with information that he gleaned from research.
  5. The novel also spawned two sequels by Mark Winegardner and was adapted into a monumental film by Francis Ford Coppola which won three Academy Awards, five Golden Globes and one Grammy and was followed by two successful sequels.
