1. A 1957 novel by a Russian novelist, poet, and translator who won the Nobel in 1958.

3.  The novel is divided into two parts with the first dealing with the theme of the war and its aftermath, while the second centering on the lyrical love story of the protagonist.

4. The futility of war, the physical resurrection of the dead, the triumph of love in the face of difficulties, religious faith, are the major themes explored in this impressionist novel.

5. The work has been adapted for film and stage several times including the popular 1956 movie version.

(i)              It is a historical novel by a major Canadian novelist and poet.

(ii)           The author won the Booker Prize for another novel, The Blind Assassin, in 2000.

(iii)         The story is about the notorious 19th century murder of a man and his housekeeper, for which a mild-mannered 16-year-old servant, Grace Marks, was convicted.  The mystery of Grace’s involvement is not solved; but the novel presents a patchwork story interlinking fact and fiction.

(iv)          Grace Marks, like many of this author’s characters, is an enigma—difficult to classify. She questions the stereotypes and conventional images thrust upon her. Here the novelist is seeking to show that truth is stranger and multifarious than fiction.

(v)            The novel is a postmodern collage, using newspaper clippings, personal letters, official documents, literary quotations and a wide variety of voices of characters.
